When Should You Mask?

How often should you truly be applying a face mask? And what are the benefits of masking?

You may wonder how often you can use a face mask, but here is a general rule of thumb, most hydrating versions can be used daily but products with exfoliating, detoxifying or anti-aging properties should be used more sparingly (a couple of times a week). Your skin type also plays a part. Pay attention to how your skin reacts post-application. Oily complexions may be able to use a clay mask up to three times a week where as a sensitive or dry type may only benefit from a weekly application. You can use your face mask morning or night, it completely depends on your schedule and your personal preferences.

Your face mask benefits totally depend on the formula you choose. For example, clay mask benefits will be different from collagen mask benefits. Depending on the formula you choose, your mask can:

Properly Applying Your Face Mask

Always cleanse your skin before masking to achieve the best results. You can also use toner or exfoliate before masking, to help the formula penetrate more effectively.

Once your skin is prepped for your mask, apply a chickpea-sized amount to your face (and neck if you desire).

Pro tip: Apply your mask in a thin layer, any more than that is a waste of product. You only need a small amount for the mask to work. A thick glob of product is only counterproductive.

Once your mask is ready to remove, rinse well with warm water. You can follow with your toner if desired, but always follow with a moisturizer.

  • Spot-mask: Apply different masks to specific areas of your face at the same time. This will tackle individual concerns in separate areas and is particularly useful for those with combination skin.
  • Back-to-back: Apply one mask first, then remove after the allotted time and apply a second mask immediately after to reap the benefits of both.
