We’ve all been there before; dark circles under the eyes, yawning constantly throughout the day, and having to make more coffee runs than we probably should. Whether it’s; working/studying late at night, binge watching a Netflix series, or having too many tasks to complete by the end of the day, not getting enough rest can truly affect our health. We all know that it is not ideal miss the opportunity to allow our bodies to rest at night, but it is unfortunately very common. Allowing our bodies to rest and recharge during the sleep cycle is very beneficial to the health of our skin. It is a proven fact that the lack of sleep can cause; dark circles, wrinkles and fine lines, swollen eyes, and paler skin. Getting a good night's rest is very beneficial to improving the health and overall look of your skin. Dermatologist, Francesca Fusco, MD, states, “Our skin rests and repairs itself while we sleep”. She mentions, “With no UV [ultraviolet] exposure and no dynamic facial muscles contracting, it’s the best time of day for skin.”
It is true that allowing your body to obtain full and complete rest does wonder for the skin. Dr. Francesca Fusco explains the process that your skin goes through during the sleeping cycle. “Overnight, skin goes into repair and restore mode, meaning it removes toxins, repairs cell and DNA damage caused by the environment, replaces aging cells, and creates new ones. That’s why after good-quality sleep, skin looks fresher, younger, and more radiant.”
Though there are many scientific facts to understand the benefits that the sleep cycle has for our skin. There are some simple ways that we can physically notice the improvements our skin has when we get enough rest.
1. Fewer Wrinkles
If you are looking for the secret to anti-aging, getting enough sleep definitely has something to do with it. Skin makes new collagen when you sleep that’s part of the repair process! Patricia Wexler, MD, a dermatologist in New York states, “More collagen means skin is plumper and less likely to wrinkle. Only getting 5 hours a night can lead to twice as many fine lines as sleeping 7 would. It also leaves skin drier, which can make lines more visible.”
2. Glowing Skin
There is an increased blood flow to our skin, which causes a healthy glow. “Sleep deprivation causes a decrease in blood flow to the skin surrounding your face,” Breus says. “Skin becomes dull, and you don’t get those rosy cheeks anymore.” Remember if you’re not feeling your best and well rested neither will your skin!
3. Healthy Looking Eyes
There is the old saying that the first signs of aging is typically within the eyes. Getting crow's feet and small wrinkles around the eyes are usually some of the first signs to aging. When you don’t get enough sleep it causes the eyes to look puffy and it also causes dark circles around the eyes. When your body is well rested the eyes look brighter and less puffy. Lack of sleep can cause for wrinkles around the eyes to come sooner than they should.
In order to have youthful, healthy, glowing skin; sleep is a must! No matter what skincare regimen or products you choose to use and preform; if you aren't getting enough rest it won’t be as effective. Sleep is very important and beneficial to our overall health and it shows through our skin.
