Adult Acne – The Second Puberty

We all know that acne is an inflammatory skin condition that most often occurs during puberty. But acne does affect adults as well. Yes, there is such a real thing as a second puberty. It’s as real as the first experience where your hormones seem to be all out of sorts. It comes unannounced and brings challenging physical and emotional symptoms. You might notice a second and third wave of acne: one between your 20s and 40s and a third (among women) around the time of menopause.

What Can You Expect During Your Second Puberty?

If you are experiencing second puberty acne, you might have noticed that you have more breakouts than usual. Along with the acne, you may begin to experience painful cramps, and slower metabolism.  But your 30s can also bring some surprising physical and mental changes. It doesn't have to be that way. There are steps you can take to turn your skin around at any age.

Some of the Causes and How to Treat It

Nearly all adult acne is caused by inflammation and clogged pores. Sometimes the condition runs in families, but even when that’s the case, there’s usually one or more triggers that bring on the acne. There are many reasons you can break out as an adult. Stress or changes in your hormone levels, like menopause or switching or stopping birth control pills, are two other possibilities.

Acne ranges from mild (a few whiteheads and blackheads) to severe (deep inflammatory cysts). Many of the same factors that trigger breakouts during puberty also play a role in adult acne: clogged pores, bacteria and fluctuating hormone levels. Acne may also occur as a side effect of medication or as a reaction to hair and skin care products.

How to treat it:  Daily Skin Care

It is very important to cleanse your skin every day to maintain a healthy and fresh glow.

  1. First, keep your hands off your face!
  2. Wash your face no more than twice a day.
  3. Use cool or warm water and a gentle cleanser.
  4. Use your hands, or a cleansing brush for 30 seconds.
  5. Pat (don't rub) your skin dry.
