Cystic Acne

Cystic Acne

Cystic acne is when one has a large and painful breakout deep under the skin. Acne starts within the pores of the skin. Usually, the cause is due to dead skin cells, bacteria, or irritation.

Cystic acne occurs when someone has an infection deep into the skin, creating bumps that's full of pus. If a cyst bursts, the infection can spread, causing more breakouts.

Don’t try to wait them out. Treat them immediately!

Cystic Acne Causes

Although doctors are not certain of the exact cause of cystic acne, it's believed to be caused by hormones called androgens. This hormone leads to changes in the skin that can result in clogged pores and breakouts.

Other reasons that can cause cystic acne:

  • Some skin products
  • A woman’s menstrual cycle
  • Certain medications
  • High humidity or sweating
  • Pregnancy
  • Menopause

Cystic Acne Complications

The cysts can lead to various complications and leave marks on your skin, like:

  • Large, uneven indents in the skin
  • Deep, tiny holes
  • Wider pits

Treatment

Most over-the-counter medications that have been known to treat mild causes of acne don't work very well for cystic acne. What has been known to be most beneficial:

  • Oral Antibiotics - to lower inflammation
  • Birth Control- to help regulate a woman’s hormones
  • Benzoyl Peroxide - to kill bacteria on your skin
